Brooklyn Sublime Frequencies Film Screening

This Weekend

Sunday, May 8th - 7 pm

Spectacle Theater
124 South 3rd Street
Brooklyn, NY 11211

Sublime Frequencies, the Seattle-based record label responsible for bringing Omar Souleyman and a myriad of other Eastern sounds to the ears of the discerning West— will be screening two films in Brooklyn on May 8th at Spectacle Theater in Williamsburg.
Artist and musician Robert Millis made the two films being shown and a Q&A with the director will accompany each screening as well as a selection of short subjects from the Sublime Frequencies archives—dreamy musical segments from Southeast Asia and beyond.
Check out the trailer for THIS WORLD IS UNREAL LIKE A SNAKE IN A ROPE below and make an appointment now for the necessary immunizations to travel to Williamsburg for this one-night stand.

THIS WORLD IS UNREAL LIKE A SNAKE IN A ROPE
A film by Robert Millis
55 minutes, 2010
Journeys to the heart of Dravidian Tamil Nadu, through the eternal never-ending collage that is INDIA. Featuring Hindu trance ceremonies, free jazz nagaswaram raga, deafening cities, processions, devotion, color, abstractions, music and more. India is too vast and rich to ever know: offered here is one tiny perspective, one dream, subjective and flawed, hanging by a thread, captured live in the moment and in the midst. One trip in the order it happened. Not quite documentary. Not quite ethnography.

At 9:00pm:
PHI TA KHON: GHOSTS OF ISAN
A film by Robert Millis
75 minutes, 2006
Described as ‘The Mardi Gras from Hell’ and ‘Thai Halloween" PHI TA KHON is a Buddhist merit making ghost festival that takes place every year in the Isan province of Northern Thailand. Thai country groove music (acoustic and electric, on temple floors and in the back of pick up trucks), magnificent masks and costumes, and phallic icons of all sizes, Phi Ta Khon is a mind-blowing and obscure tradition captured here in a DIY collage "you are there" verite style, unique to the Sublime Frequencies approach.
